Avon Old Farms School
Alterations and Replacement-In-Kind of Historic Kitchen Roof
Heritage Restoration continues to restore the sash at Avon Old Farms School. The windows are being restored using a conservation methodology, where the finishes are chemically stripped and the wood scrubbed, not sanded, so the color can stay consistent. The goal is for a clear stain finish to match final color determination. There is a stain sample photo at the end of this gallery that matches the original stain. Some points of the restoration:
- The windows were marked as C-1 and C-2. C-1 is the window on the interior left, and C-2 interior right.
- All parts marked for location
- Interior storm dimensions taken using new oak stops for previous interior storm system
- C-1 has a new oak plywood interior extension jamb
- C-2 has a drywall extension jamb
- The exterior was original, including casings, jambs, sills, screens, and sash.
- The wood was stripped using Citri-strip, pull scrapped, and scrubbed with various coarse grades of Scotch-Brite hand pads
- Wood Dutchmans done with antique heart pine
- Split moldings repaired and Titebond glued or West System epoxied
